Something New: A Contract!

Watch! I’m about to carry out something new! And now it’s springing up— don’t you recognize it? I’m making a way in the wilderness and paths in the desert. Isaiah 43:19

Why are we so happy? We’re signing a book contract! After years of publishing children’s books we are publishing our first adult novel, The Shepherd’s Song. The publisher: Simon & Schuster’s Howard Books. Many thanks to our agent, Greg Johnson at WordServe Literary Group.  We are excited! Time for the happy dance! Stay tuned …

Writing: Are We There Yet?

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will direct your paths.  Proverbs 3, 5-6

The first book is finished and published but soon euphoria gives way to doubt.  What is next?

You make the New York Times Best Seller List.  Can you do it again?

You celebrate a great review.  What if the next book fails?

There is a hopelessness that descends when we begin to think that anything is ever finished in this life.

Joy in writing comes when we learn to accept the goodness in the process.  The journey of a writing life comes with growth and creativity, relationships, successes and failures.  It is about  the long haul.

It is about the road – not the destination.

Enjoy this day of writing.

“This life therefore is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness,

not health, but healing,

not being, but becoming,

not rest, but exercise.

We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it,

the process is not yet finished, but it is going on,

this is not the end, but it is the road.

All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified.”

A Writer’s Dream

by Bob Hostetler

Lord, you showed Jacob a stairway to heaven,
and spoke to Solomon in his dreams.
You gave to Joseph and Daniel
insight into the meaning of dreams,
and gave your servant Peter a transforming vision.

God of dreams and visions,
please condescend to me in my sleep,
and inspire my writing even as I sleep.
Speak to me in the night watches,
whisper in my ear,
and make me a better writer
while I rest in your arms,
in Jesus’ name, amen.

A Monday Prayer for Peace of Mind

Dear God,
you who did not invent tizzies,
be with me when I get caught
in the wild worrying of my mind,
and the needless scurrying around
in my fearful heart.

Dear God,
you did not invent tizzies,
I did,
and only I can send them on their way,
and I will,
if you strengthen me
to let go of my anxious hold
on what is nonessential.
