Our children do not belong to us, they belong to God.

 God has given adults authority to raise and shepherd children, but he is their true shepherd. When we pray “The Lord is his shepherd” or “The Lord is her shepherd” we are moving ourselves out of first place, and restoring a right relationship in our thinking about our children.

A mother sheep leads the lambs while following the shepherd who provides the guidance and safety. The lamb only sees the mother, and follows so closely that every need seems to be met by the loving mother: the warmth of closeness, the food of the mother’s milk, the protection of the mother’s body shielding the little lamb. It would seem that the mother leads and guides them. The lambs cannot see that the mother is following the shepherd. Not until they are grown and weaned do they begin to take their place and follow the shepherd on their own.

Lambs who stray or lose their mothers are adopted by the others in the flock. This group, carefully protected by the shepherd, joins in leading the little ones.

 Children learn about God through adults in their lives: parents, grandparents, family, friends, teachers, and mentors. He is their true shepherd.

  • Our children do not belong to us, they belong to God. He entrusts them to us for their care until they are grown.
  • God loves our children more than we do. We can trust him with them.
  • As parents and caring adults in a child’s life we must constantly strive to follow the Shepherd ourselves so that we can lead those young in age or younger in faith.

He will tend his flock like a shepherd;

he will gather the lambs in his arms;

he will carry them in his bosom,

and gently lead those that are with young.

ISAIAH 40:11

 Lord God,

You are ________________ and ________________ ’s Shepherd. I surrender them to you. Lead and guide me so that I can lead and guide them. May I never get in the way of their relationship to you. Be their Lord, their Shepherd, their God.

Let __________________ and ________________ see you through me and in spite of me. As I follow you, allow me to lead them.

As they follow me, lead them into an increasingly close relationship with you, looking to you to fulfill every need, physical and spiritual. May they grow into adults who see you as their Shepherd, the one who loves and cares for them.

Bless _________________ and _________________ today with the promise to be their Shepherd. Help them constantly grow deeper into a relationship with you.

Pray without ceasing.
